In a recent interview on MSNBC, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot stated – twice- that it is better to “educate people into compliance” than to mandate a COVID vaccine.
Lightfoot went on to say that if some people take the vaccine and some opt out, that will not help anybody.
“We can’t live in a world” that allows people to choose for themselves, she asserts.
Freedom of choice would be counterproductive and even perpetuate the spread of COVID, she says.
Lightfoot explained that a range of options are being looked at, without disclosing what those options are. For now, the emphasis is on “educating people into compliance.” She will do so by taking the vaccine herself, along with her leadership team, as a means of demonstrating the vaccine’s safety.
This theme of compliance via education is heavily used by Mayor Lightfoot. In May she voiced the same strategy to achieve compliance with COVID regulations pertaining to large gatherings. “Our plan has always been to educate people into compliance,” she said in a statement quoted by the Chicago Sun Times. In that instance she was referring to a local church that was resisting her mandates.
She explained that education is her preferred method of achieving compliance but that, “we’re not gonna have a circumstance where people are blatantly ignoring the rules that have been put in place to help save peoples’ lives.”
Lightfoot has come under heavy fire by Conservatives for her refusal to intercede in the rioting and looting in Chicago. She is also alleged to have threatened members of Chicago’s Black Caucus who were considering not supporting some of her more radical decisions.
Then in November, she was again the object of public scorn for proudly taking to the streets with thousands of people celebrating the media’s announcement of Biden as the president-elect, in spite of months of strong-arming citizens who are losing businesses and demanding the schools reopen.
Lightfoot’s use of the phrase “educate into compliance” is in lockstep with more than one Far Left figure espousing the notion that Conservatives require education or reeducation. In a time where people like David Atkins, California Regional Director of the DNC posted this on his Twitter page:
“No seriously, how do you deprogram 75 million people? Where do you start? Fox? Facebook? We have to start thinking in terms of post-WWII Germany or Japan. Or the failures of Reconstruction in the South.”
Atkins quickly attempted to dig himself out of that hole when he was swarmed with angry comments and backlash, but the sentiment cannot be unfelt, and millions of Americans are growing more and more distrustful of anyone associated with similar comments.
What do you think? Do you agree with the plan to educate people into complying with mandates? Do you believe Conservatives need this more than others? Will you be taking the COVID vaccine? Why or why not?
