Monsoon has been voted California’s Teacher of the Year – three times. He teaches kids others run from, and he has firsthand knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work in our education system. Here are his thoughts on our new Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos :
A troubling subject for many, but not for this School Teacher of 19 years.
Our Education System has been broken for decades.
At least 63% of our graduating students are not prepared for either High School, College or the Workforce! It’s a sad commentary, yet rather than focus on this crisis, many take to the streets protesting our newly appointed Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos.
This Middle School Teacher has witnessed the decline of our Education System on a daily basis. Every day I see the futility of our teachers struggling to teach our youth to meet the challenges of the future.
At one time we had annual Governor Education summits. We don’t have those anymore, as they didn’t work. We have had the Federal Government step in with “No Child Left Behind,” “Full Inclusion,” and now “Common Core,” where 17 States rejected it and risked losing Federal Funding for Schools. All these Programs have failed!
The Academia “gurus” that continue to support or sponsor these programs are totally inept and out of touch with today’s curriculum, environment and demographics. Parents are frustrated, students are lost and classroom teachers opinions and advice are quickly dismissed by these “elitist” who seem to think that they know better, than those actually in the trenches.
Betsy Devos needs an opportunity to at least try and present programs, be they vouchers, Merit Pay, Charter Schools or finally allowing the individual states to create their own Academia and Curriculum Programs. Everything else has failed as evidenced by our continued failing school system.
Those that are protesting the selection of this new Secretary of Education need to educate themselves, and listen to the parents and the teachers who have a vested interest in their students quality of education. Do not allow the progressive left, the elitist, the Unions, and the ill informed to dictate any longer supporting this failed system.
